Ethoca
What Is Ethoca Alerts?
Ethoca is a payments collaboration and dispute-prevention company owned by Mastercard, which acquired the company in 2019. At the time, Mastercard framed the platform as a way for merchants and issuers to tackle digital-commerce fraud together, almost as it happens. In practical terms, the Ethoca meaning comes down to a network that lets banks and merchants exchange dispute information quickly enough for the merchant to respond.
The company’s best-known product is Ethoca Alerts, a service that warns a merchant when a cardholder has questioned one of its transactions. Mastercard positions it within its dispute management offering, which is why it also surfaces in searches for Mastercard dispute alerts.
Many merchants refer to the service as Ethoca chargeback alerts, although that description only covers part of what the network handles. Alerts can cover confirmed fraud, ordinary customer disputes, and other transaction problems, so Ethoca fraud detection is only one slice of what the network carries.
Here is how the flow runs:
- A cardholder contacts their issuing bank about a charge.
- The issuer confirms fraud or logs another qualifying cardholder dispute.
- The details travel through the Ethoca network.
- The merchant receives a real-time notification, or something very close to it.
Timing matters here, because an order that has not shipped is far easier to stop than one already delivered. An early alert can also give the merchant time to review the transaction before a refund or fulfillment decision has to be made. Once the alert lands, the merchant can investigate and, depending on what turns up, choose to:
- refund the customer;
- cancel the order;
- stop fulfillment so goods never reach a fraudster.
If the matter is resolved early enough, the merchant may prevent it from becoming a formal chargeback. That is the logic behind chargeback prevention through this channel, as a pre-dispute alert gives the merchant a chance to act, and every case that never becomes a chargeback also helps hold down the chargeback ratio.
On scale, Mastercard reported in 2020 that the network linked more than 5,000 card issuers and 8,000 merchants across 70-plus countries. Mastercard also says Ethoca Alerts has prevented more than 110 million chargebacks since 2011. For 2025 alone, it reports more than 39 million chargebacks and $1 billion in fraud prevented.
How Ethoca Differs From Verifi
Most Ethoca vs. Verifi comparisons open with ownership. Ethoca belongs to Mastercard, Verifi belongs to Visa, and both acquisitions took place in 2019. Ownership is not the same as exclusive coverage, though. Ethoca calls itself brand-agnostic, and the relationship behind the Ethoca Mastercard connection does not make the service Mastercard-only.
The more practical gap is in the workflow. Ethoca Alerts is built primarily around fast issuer-to-merchant notification. With its Ethoca notification service, it has the issuer pass dispute or fraud details to the merchant, who then investigates and decides whether to refund or halt fulfillment.
Verifi spreads the work across several tools:
- CDRN: A participating issuer routes the pre-dispute through it, and the merchant gets up to 72 hours to issue a refund. That refund window is the point of the tool, and a successful refund avoids the chargeback.
- RDR: The merchant sets rules ahead of time, and qualifying Visa cases are resolved automatically with no manual review.
- Transaction clarity: Purchase details that help cardholders recognize a charge.
Ethoca has its own upstream product, Consumer Clarity. It feeds recognizable purchase information into issuers’ digital banking experiences, so a cardholder may spot a legitimate charge instead of disputing it. Its purpose is similar to Verifi’s Order Insight, although the technical setup differs.
In short, Ethoca centers on fast issuer-to-merchant notification, while Verifi offers a menu of manual and automated routes that let merchants decide how much manual effort each individual dispute deserves.
